Although it’s not widely discussed, here are the facts about women in law…

Although women account for 49% of attorneys in law firms, only 19% are equity partners–and those are by and large white women.

Women of color are especially underrepresented in law firms, accounting for only 16% of entry-level attorneys, 10% of senior associates, 3% of equity partners, and 4% of managing partners.

Only 44 percent of women believe they can have both career success and quality personal lives as compared to 60 percent of men! (Perhaps its because we are doing ALL the mental work at home.)

3 MISCONCEPTIONS THAT KEEPS PEOPLE FROM TAKING ACTION

Misconception #1: If I just keep at it, I’ll figure it out eventually.

What you need to know: The truth is, you might figure some things out eventually, but at what cost? How many of your “maximum earning potential” years will you continue to overwork and underearn before you finally decide enough is enough? And will you burnout before then? For every year you do not take action to systemize your law firm business, you’ll likely leave hundreds of thousands of dollars on the table. What is the opportunity cost of that decision?

Misconception #2: I need to make a lot more money before I can afford to hire a team and set up systems.

What you need to know: What if I told you, it’s the opposite? You will never make the kind of money you want to make in your law firm business unless you set up systems and hire a team to help you implement them. How do I know? Because I’ve not only been in your shoes, but I’ve mentored, advised and coached hundreds of women law firm owners to scale their law firm businesses. Every single one who has done so successfully chose to make the investment in their business growth before they felt financially prepared. They knew what got them to the first level would not get them to the next.

Misconception #3: I want to set up systems, but I don’t have the time! (And I can’t hire any other attorneys until I do.)

What you need to know: One of women law firm owners’ biggest misconceptions is they need to have all systems high and tight before they hire a team—particularly other attorneys. Why? Because they are afraid other attorneys are going to see their mess and run for the hills!

This is a lie you are telling yourself so you don’t have to leave your comfort zone–you know the one where you get to control every little detail in your business.

Your job as the law firm owner is to hire people to help you do all those things you feel you don’t have “time” to do. If you don’t stop clinging to your to-do list like it’s a life-preserver and start loosening up the need to control every single detail and get it all perfect before you ask for help, you likely will never achieve the level of success you desire. As a wise mentor once told me: “You can control all the details or you can grow, but you cannot do both.”

In 2007, fresh out of law school, I hung my shingle with…

  • No legal experience
  • No mentors (or lawyers in my family)

  • A bunch of naysayers who thought I was nuts
  • $80,000 in law school loans
  • And no backup plan

Oh, and did I mention The Great Recession that began only 2 months after I opened my new office’s doors?!

Still, with my rudimentary marketing system–lots of rubber chicken dinners and some cold calling to other attorneys–I grew my practice quickly, which allowed me to bring in a partner, hire a team, and move into a more luxurious location.
Before long, I was a senior partner, managing attorney, firm administrator, litigator, and unofficial therapist of my team and clients and I felt…

  • Overworked
  • Overwhelmed
  • Exhausted

But I kept at it, trying to ignore those negative feelings. I’d always been taught that when the going gets tough, you just work harder until it gets better, so that’s what I did. But it didn’t get better.

Truthfully, I probably would have continued to ignore my feelings for a long time and persevere despite my misgivings, but as the old saying goes:

“God whispers, and when you ignore him, he starts throwing bricks…”

BRICK #1

One day, my husband came home and told me his successful business of almost two decades was going under because he lost his biggest client. As a result, we would need to file for bankruptcy. I was stunned. I could not believe he kept it from me for so long.

BRICK #2

On top of that, he said he was having a mid-life crisis and wasn’t sure he wanted to remain in our marriage. He wanted to upend his entire life because, he too, was feeling the effects of working 12-to-14-hour days, 7 days a week, and it was not good.

BRICK #3

Because of all the stress, I had gained a significant amount of weight, was not sleeping well, and felt like crap. Both my mental and physical health took a nosedive, and my doctors wanted to put me on medications.

Ultimately, we made decisions to walk away from all but our marriage and start over. This included selling out my share of my law firm business to my partner. It was not easy to leave what I had built or to face the uncertainty of our future, but I knew I was on the right path when I felt profound relief instead of sad.

 

Davina strategic planningAfter several months of healing, both physically and emotionally, working on my marriage with my spouse, and working in (and working out in) our new gym business, in 2011, I once again launched a law firm business–this one entirely virtual and transactional. I vowed I would do everything differently because I knew the way I had built my first law firm business, though profitable, was not sustainable.

Here are the steps I took:

STEP #1 ASKED FOR HELP

Since I wasn’t sure exactly how to do that, I began by hiring a high-ticket business coach, even though…

  • I didn’t have a full-time job or a steady income.
  • My business was brand new, and I wasn’t sure how I would pay for the program.
  • My husband wasn’t thrilled about me spending the money, especially given our recent financial troubles.

The only thing I knew is that I could not start over without more support and guidance, AND it was time to start investing more in myself and what I truly wanted—not some idea of what I thought others expected of me.

Although that coaching experience did not help me create my million-dollar business in a year, it showed me there was a different way to be successful, one that did not require me to sacrifice everything else in life that was important to me.

STEP #2 UPLEVELED MY MINDSET

When that program ended, I hire my next high-ticket coach who worked with me one-to-one (and invested more than ever). That coach helped me realize the biggest obstacle holding me back were my limiting beliefs around money. Beliefs like…

When will I have access to the material?

You will have immediate access to Module 1, Module 2 and Module 2A. The remaining content will be dripped out weekly (every seven days). Why do we do this? We’ve tried it both ways—delivering it all at once and dripping it out weekly—and we’ve found our clients are more successful when we help them move at an even pace through the content. Otherwise, ambitious women that you all are, you’ll likely try to rush thru and absorb everything at once and then get frustrated when you can’t because there’s simply too many details!

How much time should I set aside per week?

Each module is about an hour, give or take a few minutes. The homework, though, may take you longer. Why? Because it is not “homework” just for homework’s sake. The materials, cheat sheets, guides, templates and models are designed to help you get a jump start on setting up your own systems in the way that works best for you and your team. If you follow our method, though, you won’t be doing it all by yourself. In fact, we don’t recommend that!

How do I ask questions or get feedback during the program?

What is your refund policy?

How many months should it take me to complete?

How long it takes you to complete this course and your systems set-up is entirely up to you. We recommend you watch at least one module a week and work through the homework assignments. However, that pace may be way to intense for some. It may be that you need to spend a whole month addressing just one system–or even more. Don’t get into your head about it. This is not a race. Systems evolve over time just as we do. Just start where you are and schedule in time each week to work on making progress.
